ASM Wellness prepares students to perform at the top of their industry upon graduation– by equipping them with not only the tools to be excellent therapists, but also with knowledge of the close ties between environmental health and personal well being. Having learned about the best eco-friendly products and practices allows graduates to be able to successfully help clients achieve good health through massage and natural lifestyles.
Both the Esthetics (AIA) and Massage therapy (ASM) programs offered at ASM Wellness include an introduction to sustainability as part of the program curriculum. Students learn the vital connections between personal well-being, economic sustainability, and the health of our planet. Topics covered include waste reduction, safe, non-toxic personal care products, and water and energy conservation.
Every day we are exposed to numerous toxins in our environment. Limiting the amount of toxins that we ingest is one of the simplest and most effective healthy lifestyle changes we can make. Health issues like disease, fatigue, insomnia, and depression are often a result of toxic buildup in the body.
As the largest organ, skin helps to release toxins but also absorbs most of whatever we place on it. Commonly used face and body lotions, bath soaps, and cosmetics contain surprisingly toxic and harmful ingredients. Propylene glycol and diazolidinyl urea? These are just a few of the many ingredients used in common personal care products that are known irritants and carcinogens. Brands like Lotus Moon, Jane Iredale, and Coola Suncare are a great starting point for clients to switch over to personal care products made without harmful chemicals and preservatives. You are what you eat, but also what you put on your skin.
In addition to excellent massage techniques, learning information like this allows graduates to find jobs that incorporate healing with sustainable, healthy lifestyles. “It’s always beneficial when new hires actively participate in a green lifestyle; it ensures that a connection already exists between the company culture and their values,” says Cici Coffee, CEO of the übergreen Natural Body Spa and Shop. Coffee of Natural Body has had success using online career services provided by schools with a stated sustainability mission, such as the Atlanta School of Massage. “Candidates from these networks show up to interviews brimming with environmental passion,” she raves.
