Brides, Don’t Buy the Hype

By: Eric Lichtfuss

Helping people look a certain way or lose weight has never popped up as anything more than a fringe benefit and byproduct of helping people achieve personal growth.

TRX technique

When we teach our students how to write and coach their programming, I rarely approach them and tell them to stop, But I regularly ask them “why?” What is the Risk vs. Reward for the Client?

Forget the Machines, the Furniture is Trying to Take Over

By: Eric Lichtfuss

I sit at my desk or in the coffee shop, reading, writing or typing and I gradually fall forward, hunching over my studies. My back and ribs haven’t been this unhappy in years.  This story is nothing new, and I’m far from the first person to endure this. But I’m developing strategies to help myself, and finding that some of the best strategies for helping my back are also benefitting me in other ways.  I’m hoping that this can help all you desk jockeys out there with your desk-induced discomfort, your stress levels, and your overall health and happiness.

Effects of High Heels and Common Postural Dysfunctions

By: Eric Lichtfuss

I was discussing postural analysis and common postural dysfunctions with my students at Atlanta School of Massage last night, and at some point, someone asked if heels could affect one’s posture. Yes, wearing high heels – even wedges – on a regular basis can affect all kinds of other structures upstream, all the way to the head.  A small tilt or angle down at the feet can expand into a much greater postural imbalance by the time you reach the head and neck.

The “Other Side” of Massage Therapy

By: Eric Lichtfuss

Call it what you want – personality, vibe, energy, chi, prana, yin and yang, emotional intelligence, compassion, or nonsense – there is an indescribable, intangible power within our individual presences. Sometimes people receive a massage for the nurturance provided by the therapist, and sometimes even for the “energy” of that person.

I want to offer some ideas and suggestions intended to help break down the barriers we seem to build for ourselves, in our minds, that prevent us from moving towards our goals.

By: Eric Lichtfuss

So, What are the components of mobility drills and how should I incorporate mobility work into my exercise regimen?, you ask.

Ultimately, in my opinion, mobility drills entail expressing your range of motion in some degree of movement context, with an intention and an effort to improve that range.

Foam Rolling, Stretching and Mobility, Part 2: Stretching

By: Eric Lichtfuss

Without adequate flexibility, mobility of a given joint will be limited. Muscle flexibility can be improved through stretching. Stretching can help affect both the muscle tissue, itself, and the nerves that innervate and control the muscles.

Massage Therapy Media Needs an Imaging Overhaul

By: Eric Lichtfuss

I’m irritated. No sugar-coating, no spin, no kid gloves. Every time I turn around and see how massage is represented, specifically in media through images, I’m upset. Even in trade magazines, the imaging of massage is unrealistic. Images depicting massage therapists in awkward poses with god-awful body mechanics in over-idealized settings like the middle of the woods look like photos of interpretive dance.
